It is not appropriate to use certain subordinate conjunctions for scientific writing purposes. Conjunctions such as "therefore", "thus", "hence", "since", "however", etc. should be avoided. I must agree that 9/10 one can merely drop the conjunction without changing the meaning or flow much, but in certain cases they do contribute.
